Joy

"If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don't hesitate. Give into it. .... Joy is not made to be a crumb."
Mary Oliver, "Don't Hesitate", The Swan (2010)

Nina Renee & Benith Richardson in front of my parents’ house in Phoenix, January 1962.

I love this photo of Beni and Renee. It captures them as little girls, their sweet innocence. I found it in a box of my dad’s old photos after he died. His brother, Frank, also had a copy of this photo among the cache of photos he left behind, so he may have been the one who took it. But whoever took it, I’m grateful to them. It gives me a back a piece of the past that is long gone. Thank you, Dad. Thank you, Uncle Frank.

Joy, yes. I feel joy looking at this photo. It’s almost like holding my little girls in my arms again. I post it here to preserve that moment in time for myself and for others. I want others to see how precious they were.

Joy is not made to be a crumb.”
